Going to Defiance
(Post No. 4) Susie and I are flying to Defiance, Ohio, this Sunday, Oct. 27 (2019). We were able to prove we are direct descendants of Michael and Sophia Gorman, so the genealogical society has a pin and certificate for each of us Gorman Girls. They would have mailed them to us but we planned our trip to coincide with their annual "First Families" reception at the meeting on Monday, where they will ceremoniously present us with our awards. (If you can prove your ancestor settled in Defiance in 1847, you're a member of the First Families designation, an honor for those of us who care about such things!)
We are also going to tour the house that Michael and Sophia lived and raised their five surviving children in. It was up for sale last spring and bought by a young couple. I contacted them, explained the connection, and they invited us to see it firsthand. This beautiful brick home was built in 1870; Michael bought it sometime between 1877 and 1880. It is the photograph above. The house had been a rental for quite some time (with the attendant degradation) until the couple bought it. They say they are restoring it to its former glory and we’re really looking forward to seeing it.
We'll return on Thursday but in the meantime, I plan to post at least a couple of blogs while we're there to let you know what we're finding and learning about the First Gormans in Defiance. By the way, the header photo on the home page of this blog is the town of Defiance.
Lindy had a commitment to her golf tournament this weekend which is why she couldn't join us. We'll miss you, Lindy!
